3 Travel Coverage Myths That Leave You Exposed

Comment(s) - By Flora Jordan

Today's a quick one. But it might be the most useful thing you read all season.

These are the three beliefs I correct most often — because all three leave good travelers exposed without them ever knowing it.

Myth 1: "My credit card covers me."

Probably not as much as you think. Credit-card travel benefits are real — but they're usually thin, capped low, and almost never include serious medical evacuation.

The fine print giveth a little and taketh away a lot.

Pull up your card's benefits guide and read the actual limits. Most people never have. Do it once, and you'll know exactly where you stand.

Myth 2: "My health insurance works abroad."

Usually, it doesn't. The U.S. Department of State is clear: Medicare does not cover medical costs outside the United States, and most private plans won't pay to bring you home by air ambulance.

They go quiet the moment you cross a border.

So ask your provider one direct question before you go: "Am I covered outside the country — and will you fly me home?"

Myth 3: "I'll just buy something if I need it."

You can't. This is the costly one.

You can't insure a house that's already on fire.

Protection has to be in place before the moment it's needed. Once something has happened, the window has closed. Every time.

What's the real fix?

Stop assuming. Start checking. Notice the thread running through all three myths — people believe they're covered without ever verifying it.

The remedy isn't fear. It's a five-minute look: pull the card benefits, call the health plan, confirm what's in place before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my credit card cover medical evacuation? Rarely in any meaningful way. Most card travel benefits are capped and exclude serious evacuation. Check your specific card's benefits guide.

Does U.S. health insurance work overseas? Often not. Per the U.S. Department of State, Medicare doesn't cover care abroad, and most private plans won't pay to transport you home.

Can I buy travel protection after something goes wrong? No. Protection must be purchased before an event occurs — coverage can't be added retroactively.
